TEACHING AT SOMAS

Teacher FAQ

How do I get started teaching at SOMAS?

Submit your course proposal using the Course Proposal form (https://www.somadultschool.org/courseproposal). We review all proposals. If your course is a fit for an upcoming semester, we will contact you. Sometimes a proposal isn’t a fit for the upcoming semester due to timing or content, however, we keep all proposals on file for future semesters.

Because of the volume of proposals we receive, we aren’t always able to confirm receipt of your submission, but you can be sure we have it.

How do people register for my class?

Your class will be listed in our catalog and people can register online. We will send you a roster before your class starts.

Where will my class take place?

Most in-person classes take place at Columbia High School (CHS), 17 Parker Ave., Maplewood. You will receive your classroom location with your roster. The security team at CHS can help you locate your classroom if needed.

Some classes take place at the teacher’s business/studio, outside, or at an off-site location, depending on the needs of the class.

Can I teach a class online?

Yes. We offer classes via Zoom, when appropriate. We can provide a Zoom link, if needed.

Will a SOMAS staff member be available when I teach in case I have questions?

Most in-person classes are held on Tuesdays, Thursdays, or Saturdays and our office in room A110 is open at those times. Our Building Administrator will be on hand to answer any questions you may have.

Do classes get canceled?

Classes that don’t meet the minimum enrollment are canceled. Minimum enrollments are determined by SOMAS with input from the teacher and are based on the cost to run the class.

If a class is running, but one session needs to be canceled by the teacher, a make-up session can be added in most cases.

Should I promote my class?

Yes! We promote our classes and catalog, but we rely on our teachers to support our efforts. Many teachers send us images and/or headshots for us to use in promotion and we can also share our graphics.

When do I get paid?

Teachers are paid by check after the class ends.

Where can I park?

For classes at Columbia High School, parking is available on the surrounding streets. Be sure to read street signs carefully for restricted areas. Handicapped parking is available.
